The Lord and the Knight

(Part 1 from 1. Fiction.)

He was drifting in the darkest of his dreams.

He felt so powerless, as if there was no escape from the void he was in. He thought about succumbing to his despair until a figure materialized in his view. At first, fear seemed to grip him thinking that the figure was his twin star present to torment him even more.
The figure turned around and was approaching him. Closer and closer, fear was rising in his body. Although he does not admit it, he can no longer bear more physical and mental torment. He about to shatter into pieces. He cannot endure any longer.

But the figure has a different presence. Not the negative aura that his former best friend exuded. This person, as he thought, has come not to make him suffer. A gentle smile formed on the figure’s seemingly friendly lips. As the figure extended his right hand, he pondered on taking it. He cannot recognize the face, he was certain that he had not met this man before, but his smile was genuine as if urging him to take the hand.

It took him great efforts to raise his hand to close the space between. It seems that he cannot afford to do even that simple movement. But then the figure moved even closer. Upon contact of their fingers, he felt the energy of the figure transferring into him. A powerful force that rejuvenated his mind and body. Without uttering a word, the figure seemed to have changed his outlook in life. A renewed sense to take on life, to move on.

With the renewed strength coursing through his limbs, he stood and hurried to embrace the figure. In his mind, he knew that this person is his savior, his strength.

Scott Patrick awoke in the middle of the night. A check on his digital clock in the bedside table told him that it was 2:00 AM. Again, as it was for several nights now, he dreamt of Setto Angelo, the knight who opened his heart when he closed it to the world. The one who encouraged him to face the world when he let despair overcome him.

It has been a week since he met Setto. They first met in his consciousness, their physical meeting occurred after his advice to return to reality and take the challenge of confronting his demons. He woke up with Setto lying atop him exhausted as he expended his energy in the spell to save Patrick.

With his powers, Patrick recovered quickly, his wounds were now healed completely, leaving no traces that they were there only a few days ago. Knowing that he won’t be able to drift into slumber, he dressed and went to the veranda of the Palace of the Dawn.

He needed time to think and thought that the silence of the cool night will give the peace that he needed for him to think about his plans. From where he stood he can see clearly the expanse of the massive palace grounds. He can see the rings of walls that traced the protected the borders of his palace.

His mind was transfixed to the skies. Under the twinkling stars, he thought about the undetermined feeling that he felt for the man he always sees in his dreams. He imagined those lovely purple eyes staring at him as he held up his hands to reach Setto’s. A wisp of wind blew made him hug himself. His thin shirt offering little protection from the cold. He decided to return to his room to grab a jacket because he thought that such a lovely night would be such a waste if spent within the walls of his room.

As he turned, he was caught off guard when he saw a figure sitting in a chair near the door. It was the person who always turns up in his dreams, Setto. He was not wearing his long white coat. His black long-sleeves and his mysterious silence camouflaged him in the darkness of the night. He jerked in his surprise.

Setto smiled with the slightest curl of lips at the sight of a surprised Patrick. Patrick blushed in response, not knowing whether it was because of the surprise or just because of Setto’s presence, the feeling of cold totally forgotten. “Lovely night,” Setto said.
Patrick was totally out of himself. He didn’t know how to respond, he just bowed his head. He turned around again and leaned against the railings hiding his reddening cheeks. Amidst the astonishment, he noticed Setto’s eyes, those purple orbs which are filled by sadness.

Soon, Setto stood and walked towards Kamui and leaned at the railings just a few feet at Patrick’s left. Then Setto began to talk to Patrick. “How are your injuries?” he asked. Patrick still did not know how to answer. This is his first time talking to Setto, and they are alone. Setto sensing the uneasiness in Patrick, asked again.

Patrick mustered all his courage to speak but only managed to utter “I’m fine now” seemingly whispering. Setto turned towards him and said, “Happy to hear that.” Patrick then faced Setto and looked at his face. The slight smile is still there and looking into his eyes, again detected that sadness that seem to speak for itself.

Patrick could not maintain eye contact and shook his head, tears forming in the corners of his eyes. The image imprinted in his mind caused by the torment of his twin star punishes him. In a moment, Patrick was sobbing. Setto noticed this in the teen beside him.

At first, he thought Patrick was just cold, but soon he realized that this is not just because of the temperature. Setto instinctively pulled Patrick gently towards him and wrapped his arms around him.
Setto then felt the warmth of the young man around him and knew that this was beyond physical warmth, he felt protected in Setto’s arms.

Wrapped in Setto’s comforting presence, Patrick leaned in Setto’s hard chest. “I’m afraid,” he said without realizing. Hearing Patrick’s words, Setto tightened the hug as if conveying the thought that he is there to protect him. “I’m afraid of what is to come”, Patrick continued and then wrapped his own arms around Setto’s torso.

Setto, trying to comfort the teen in his arms, stroked Patrick’s hair and kissed the part where his hand passed. “The Knights of the Dawn will always be at your side, to defend you. To protect you,” he said and kissed Patrick’s head again, this time his lips lingering in Patrick’s hair.

The last sentence reverberated in Patrick’s ears. “Protect you…”
He raised his head to face Setto, the hug tightening, tears streaming in his cheeks. In an instant, Patrick reached upwards to kiss Setto’s lips. Upon contact with Setto’s soft lips, Patrick closed his eyes. The kiss lasted for a few seconds, but for Patrick it seemed that it was eternity.

Setto broke the kiss. Patrick was startled thinking that he offended Setto, but was comforted when Setto said “I will protect you. With my life.” Patrick’s eyes widened and more tears flowed from his golden eyes. Setto stroked his cheek and Patrick reached again to kiss Subaru’s lips. This time it was longer.
