Cruelty is supposed to be in the story not the commentary. In this case, we are looking at cause and effect; A misdeed is punished severely. Not as severely as it might have been but then...the transgression was only a peg or two above curiosity and usage. One assumes that greater transgressions would carry greater penalties. Or one hopes so.
