A Scout Master’s Folly

“Is Kyle in the damn mini-van yet?” Chuck O’Brian hollered down the staircase to his wife as he hopped on one foot frantically trying to put a sock on the other foot.

“How the hell am I supposed to know?” Came a sassy retort back up the stairs.

Chuck rolled his eyes as he felt his annoyance start to build. “Maybe if you got off your ass for five minutes to look, you could give me an answer that’s worth a shit.” Chuck blasted back.

The only answer Chuck got in response this time was the sound of a door slamming downstairs. With his sock finally on, and his crisp, tan scout master shirt tucked neatly into his well-fitting blue jeans, he quickly pulled together the rest of the items he needed and barreled down the stairs.

“KYLE! If your butt isn’t in the passenger seat in the next minute, you’re going to be stuck at home while the rest of us enjoy the great outdoors this weekend.”

Chuck knew that most 18 year olds these days would be more than happy to spend the weekend lounging at home, heads buried in their cell phones or video games but to his son Kyle, this threat would actually motivate him. The newly minted Eagle Scout loved the outdoors and the thought of missing time in the wilderness actually would be a punishment.

Sure enough, Chuck heard the sound of Kyle careening down the hallway behind him as he headed for the front door. Within minutes, both were clicked into their seats in the mini van and backing out of the driveway.

“I’m excited to help you lead this Boy Scout meeting, Dad.” Kyle stated with genuine enthusiasm.

“Oh be honest, you’re more excited to get the Boy Scout meeting over with so we can get-out-of-dodge with John, Matthew and Garrett.” Chuck shot back sarcastically.

“Ok, you caught me. I’m more excited for this camping trip.” Kyle shot back at his dad with his wide, boyish grin.

“You know, I’m going to miss these outing with you when you go off to college next year, buddy.” Chuck said in a more sobered tone. “You and I have always had a lot of fun together.”

“Ah dad, don’t get all mushy on me now.” Kyle said pleadingly. “I’m only going to be a few hours down the road. We’ll have holidays and the occasional weekend here or there. Don’t forget summers too. I figured you’d be happy to get rid of me. It seems like all my friends’ parents are ready for them to leave .”

“Yeah well I’m not your friends’ parents – I actually like you and unlike most of them I don’t resent my kid. You’ll make new friends and get busy with school. God help me when you find yourself some pretty little lady, you’ll never come home!” Chuck uttered morosely.

“I don’t think you’re going to have to worry too much about me getting distracted by girls, Dad. The girls in school barely noticed me. Hell, I was lucky to make it to second base. I doubt my luck will be any better in college.” Kyle declared with a sullen look on his face.

“You didn’t miss much with the high schools girls, kiddo. They’re more trouble than they’re worth anyway. As handsome, kind and smart as you are, I think you’ll be surprised at how your fortunes change throughout your four years of college.” Chuck responded forcefully. “I never got all the way around the bases until I met your mother senior year!” He finished.

“Gawh!!! Gross, Dad. Too much information!” Kyle blurted as he squished his face in disgust.

“Oh c’mon. How the hell do you think you made it into this world?” Chuck responded laughing. He reached across the car to give his son a playful punch.

“I’ll go to my grave believing I’m a test tube baby before I give one second of thought to you and mom doing anything but holding hands.” Kyle mumbled. “Is this car ride over yet?”

“You’ll only be tortured by my presence for another 5 minutes. We’re almost there.” Chuck finished with a grin.

---------

“You ready to get out of here, buddy?” Chuck asked as the Boy Scout meeting wrapped up.

The father and son raced to the car and were blasting Tom Petty within minutes.

“Yes! Let’s get on the road. I bet Mr. Dooley, Matt and Garrett have a big fire already going at the cabin. I can’t wait to see Matt and Garrett and hear all about what they’re doing these days now that they’ve graduated college.”

“You always did look up to them didn’t you?” Chuck remarked.

“Yeah, I’ve always thought they were so cool. They’ve treated me like a little brother. They kind of filled that void for me without my own older brother and Mr. Dooley has always gone out of his way to take an interest in me.”

“He’s one of my oldest friends. I couldn’t ask for a better friend. We go way back and have been through a lot. He’s always considered you to be a son and I’ve always thought of Matt and Garrett like my own sons.”

“Why didn’t you and mom ever have more kids?” Kyle interjected abruptly.

A long silence engulfed the car.

“You don’t have to answer that, Dad. I’ve just never thought to ask all these years –not sure why.” Kyle stated timidly.

“Your mom and I were so happy to have you, we didn’t want any other kiddos.” Chuck responded.

“Yeah, I don’t believe that for a second.” Kyle laughed.

“It’s complicated, buddy. Maybe when you’re older and you’ve experienced more with a relationship or God willing a marriage, we can talk more about it.”

Chuck took a sharp right and the sound of gravel under the car wheels signaled they were getting close to the cabin.

Sure enough, when the two pulled up they could see a blazing fire with three indistinct shapes sitting around it.

--------

After many hugs and handshakes all five men sat around the campfire joking and chatting. The men hadn’t seen each other in months – Kyle and Mr. Dooley’s sons hadn’t seen each other in years. There was a lot to catch up on.

“Excuse me, gentlemen, nature calls,” John Dooley stated as his lumbering 6’5 tall frame stood.

“Shit, I’m about to burst too. I’ll join ya in the bushes.” Chuck quipped.

“The more the merrier. You’re slower than me so if a bear comes, I’ll be good to go.” John joked.

The men took off to the wood line away from the boys and out of earshot.

Glancing over his shoulder, John leaned his husky frame in closer to Chuck’s squat, bullish built body, “I’ve missed ya man. We don’t get out here just the two of us enough.”

“Yeah man, you remember the good old days where we’d come out here days at time. Our wives would have to practically drag us home!”

“How could I forget? You and I had some truly amazing nights out here by the camp fire, under the stars.” John said with a leading edge to his voice.

“We sure did. Man, I miss those days! What happened?” Chuck inquired wistfully.

“Life happened. Kids, cars, mortgages, jobs, our wives. God knows I love Trish but she’s a damn handful.” John said.

“Yeah, I’m a bit worried about me and Leslie. We’ve put so much of ourselves into Kyle over these years. When he leaves next year, I’m not sure we’re going to recognize each other.” Chuck said hesitantly.

“You guys have been through so much. With as much as you love each other, this is just one more obstacle to overcome together. You’ll adjust fine. Be patient.” John remarked reassuringly.

The two stood in silence, cocks in hand. They had long since quit pissing.

“This may be the beer talking but you think we can get some alone time out here this time around? The kids are more than old enough to take care of themselves.” Chuck whispered in his husky voice.

“Oh I think we can swing something, my friend. I’m going nuts. It’s been weeks for me since I got off and too long since I’ve had any of THAT kind of fun.” John responded.

“Did you old geezers get lost out there or what?” Garrett yelled from the campfire.

“Watch it, stud. You may think you’re a big hot shot now that you’re grown but you’re not too old to get a spanking from your dad.” John yelled back.

“I could use a spanking!” Chuck whispered with a playful slap on John’s ass.

John responded quickly and quietly, “Keep it up and you’ll get one and more,” and then yelled, “Alright you insolent shits, we’re coming back.”

Within the hour, the men extinguished the campfire and called it a night. A brisk ‘old man’s hike’ awaited John and Chuck in the morning and both couldn’t wait.

-----------

The birds had barely begun to sing when Chuck jumped out of bed anticipating tingling in every inch of his body. His morning wood surged painfully in his boxer briefs. His cock yearned for the excitement ahead.

The boys were still fast asleep but John was already in the kitchen.

“Morning, hot stuff.” John whispered playfully with a devilish grin.

It took every ounce of self-restraint Chuck had to not leap across the room and maul John right then and there - to hell with what the boys would see.

“Ready to head out?” Chuck asked.

“More than you can imagine.” John replied.
