Tuesday when I didn’t show up at the pit Ayitey was worried something was wrong, and ask the overseer to check for him. Araway accompanied the overseer to the pit, and took Ayitey to the shelter. Araway told Ayitey I was leaving for America, and didn’t want to create a problem telling him in person. He told Ayitey I was upset about leaving him, and couldn’t deal with a personal encounter.
Ayitey was upset, but said he knew it was coming, and could deal with my leaving. He told Araway he just wished I had told him earlier in person. This did make me feel bad, that I didn’t give him a warning a head of time.
Wednesday after breakfast Orsty drove me to the Capital to catch my flight home to the US. We got to the Capital just before dusk, and checked into a hotel for the night.
The next morning Orsty took me to the airport, and gave me a big hug and a envelope. He told me not to open the envelope until I had gotten home, so that no one else would see the contents. I said goodbye and boarded the plane.
When I finally reached home, I unloaded my luggage and put things away. I put the envelope Orsty had given me on the dining room table to look at later. After I got everything put away, I went out to get something to eat. When I came back, I got undressed and took a shower. After getting ready for bed, I sat down and opened the envelope Orsty had given me.
The envelope contained a letter from Araway, and he started out by saying he had a confession. He informed me he knew all about my being Ayitey’s slave while in the pit. The overseer had told him what was going on between Ayitey and me.
Araway said he was about to send me home and bar me from the mine, but he was talked out of it by the overseer. The overseer told Araway, that I seemed content in serving Ayitey as his slave, and we worked well together. The overseer pointed out that my presence, working naked, in the pit was helping the morale.
He told Araway I was well liked by all the slaves, and they liked that I was friendly and accepted them as friends. He told Araway the slaves had really appreciated my buying them mattresses and pillows, and other things I had done for them.
Araway told me I could work everyday in the pit when I returned. I wrote him back with a big HA HA, and told him that might be a bit much.
