Collision

(Part 1 from 8. Fiction.)

Chapter 1

Adam blankly stares at the blonde sitting in front of him. He waits for the obnoxious crowd sitting at the next table to quit their boisterousness. Not that it seems like a possibility since it hasn’t been quiet since Adam has taken this ominous seat. Once it becomes slightly quiet, only enough for him to be audible, he speaks.
“You brought me to a gay bar to dump me?”

The blonde girl looks about herself, her brows meeting in the center valley between her eyes. She looks uglier now that Adam knows about her disinterest in him. It isn’t every day that he is rejected. In fact, if he remembers correctly, the last time a girl ditched him was when he was a freshman in high school and wore huge nerdy glasses. Now that he is capable of turning heads of ten girls at once, he rarely encounters dumb blondes like these who make such stupid decisions.
Done with her scouting, the girl turns to him, “Don’t be stereotypical. Gay or not, it’s a bar. Get over it.”

Adam raises his eyebrows at her, wondering to himself how he could have dated someone so dumb, even if for a week. Initially, after realizing that he is invited to a gay bar, Adam had gotten a strong inkling on the girl’s part to display her broadmindedness. And of course, he expected her to be one of those heterosexual girls who get turned on with the idea of two men together. Adam feared a threesome proposal but decided to play along to see where this was leading. Naturally optimistic, his first thought was sex with a ridiculously turned on blonde at the end of the night. The last thing on his mind was being dumped.

“I do not want to argue.” Jenna continues, picking up her purse from the table, “It was fun while it lasted but you don’t really seem the type to take this anywhere.”
Right, Adam thought sarcastically, And she knows that within a week. She is right to some extent as Adam has never been the type to date a girl for more than two weeks. But he is in college, for Christ’s sake. Who is even looking for taking anything anywhere?
“Alright.” Adam says in a bland tone. He grabs his beer and takes a sip, “Have fun.”

Taken aback by the abrupt dismissal, Jenna falters on her way to effectively walk away from the table. She expects Adam to reason with her, to plead her to give him another chance. Too bad, thought Adam. He feels glad to be rid of her. He never fancied hypocritical girls. Or maybe he is just consoling himself after being dumped for the first time in eons. But, really, whatever the hell. The night’s young, maybe he can get another catch.

Without goodbye, Jenna walks away. Adam doesn’t even glance at her retreating form; the wheels of his mind already at work for his schedule for the night. His two best friends would be busy; one on a date with his girlfriend, while the other on a study session with his class mate for the upcoming Monday exam. He isn’t in the tolerable state to deal with his other not so good guy friends. He can call one, or more, of his female friends but most of them would end up assuming it to be a date and Adam is seriously not in the mood to handle anymore girly drama for the night. It is time like these he realizes that he literally has no female friend. Not a single girl with whom he can talk to without making it look like something more. That is both a pro and a con of his coquettish personality. He thinks of hitting some club and engaging in promiscuous sex with any willing girl, but then he thought, Fuck it.

He is dumped tonight, something he literally never underwent. His ego is hurt, whether he wants to admit it or not. And from the bottom of his heart, he just wants to get drunk and drown in his sorrow on this unfortunate night. He has no friends around to get embarrassed in front of and so no qualms about expressing his disappointment through vodka shots. With his mind made up, Adam walks towards the bar.

He perches on one of the stools and orders himself four vodka shots. His drinks are placed in front of him not two seconds later. Smiling at the shots, since they are his best friend for the night, he motions to raise one glass only to have his hand collide with someone else’s.
“Jeez, I’m so sorry.” A guy says while comically saving the contents of the glass to spill. Still, a few drops fall about. “I thought those were mine.”
“They were placed in front of me.” Adam reasons but he is smirking. He may be upset but he has never been the one to take out his bad mood on other people.
“Yeah,” says the guy, “I just didn’t expect someone alone to drown shots.”
“But find it okay to drown them yourself?” Adam replies, still smirking.
“Actually,” the guy smiles, “They are for my friends for tonight.” He points towards the noisy table which Adam was mentally complaining about only moments before.

Adam nods, having nothing to reply. The barman put forth another four shots, saving an awkward silence. The guy hastily grabs the tiny glasses in his hands and smiles at Adam, “Sorry again, mate. Have fun.”

Adam smiles back, momentarily disturbed to realize that the guy is as good looking as him, probably even more so. He never likes a guy being better in appeal than him. He never likes to be the side stock while the better looking guy hogs all the girls. Thankfully, Adam is usually the one to hog all the girls, rarely getting any competition with guys around. But he is paranoid after being dumped and so doesn’t like the idea of good looking guys around him. Insecurities, he thought blandly while glancing about the bar to see where the girls have their attention routed.

And that’s when he remembers. This is a gay bar. All he gets to see are gay couples, or a group of friends; some drags, rarely a straight couple. Not a single girl in sight. Adam sighs heavily and drowns his four shots in one go.
