Fire in the Firehouse Part 5

(Part 1 from 2. Fiction.)

(The end part of part 4)

The snow was pounding down hard on the area still and now some of it was forcing its way inside. The two men knew they'd need to get dressed and get the issue under control. Mitch offered, "Sweetheart, we need to get dressed and get out and get this tree out of here and fast. And I think I have a plan."

Colby half sensing his boyfriend's intentions followed behind as Mitch raced up the hall to get dressed. "Right behind ya boss," he remarked humorously trying to lighten the mood. "I think I know what you're thinking and its gunna be tough, but I think we can do it."

With that, they were down the hall to get dressed. They had their work cut out for them, but being trained as they were, it could get done, they hoped.

Mitch had devised a plan to get out of the firehouse. There was a window high up in the firehouse. The place itself was a one story building, but there was also a window up a bit higher than the snow. To best describe it, one simply has to see in their mind's eye the shape of the building, much like any other fire station. With the roof being triangular and slopped for the snow to slide off and not accumulate, common for many structures in this region. There was also a window at the peak, nothing more than for decoration and to add daylight.

The two men dressed in silence, layering on just enough clothing to allow mobility, yet would shield them from the frigid air that awaited them. No time to admire the profound beauty of their bodies this time. Colby was puzzled what his newfound lover had in mind. He knew not to riddle the other with pointless questions and opted to go along with the course of action.

Mitch sighed at the daunting task and decided to fill his lover in. "Ok, its like this. We're going to use a ladder from here in the station to climb out of here. Then, since the way the structure is shaped, there's a piece right below to step on. There shouldn't be too much snow, but we'll take a rope to be certain, something to hold on to, there's a hook there to attach it to. But I think we can just hop out the window, and climb down. Hell, probably can just jump on the snow there's so much."

Colby liked the idea. It sounded a bit difficult, but pretty much coincided with their training. No different than scaling down a mountain to rescue someone. All in all, a simple task. There was little for the other fireman to say other than, "Got it. Shouldn't be too hard."

They quickly made their way to retrieve the equipment they needed. They grabbed a ladder. Mitch holding it in front, Colby in the back. Before heading to the window, Colby reached down, grabbed the rope and off they went.

Much to their delight, they found the window was able to be opened. Since they'd never had occasion to find out if it were functional or not, they never knew one way or another. Mitch being at the top of the ladder, "This totally works, it opens. 'Course, this is a firehouse. Stands to reason every possible way to get out is 100% accessible." Colby smiled in response.

Mitch then gave Colby a task to complete. "Babe, I need you to run back, grab the plywood and some nails. And then we'll also need the chain saw." Colby scurried back to get the wood and nails first, then the chain saw. Luckily they had some spare wood from some fires they'd had in the area last summer. They kept it stored for future use.

Colby took a few moments to himself to think, speaking aloud quietly. "Mitch is just incredible. He's such a natural born leader. I do know that once we're rescued, we definitely have a future to plan together. But I guess that's for later. For now we need to focus on the task at hand. I'm just glad we're trained for this kinda crap."

He continued to gather the stuff and got back to thinking about what it was he was doing before he got too caught up in his thoughts. What mattered most right now was getting the gaping hole covered as best they could.

Mitch, too was lost in thoughts speaking to himself as well. "That man is amazing. He's everything I want in a lover. He knows me well and we have a good chemistry. Its nothing shy of amazing. I've never been this drawn to another person in all my life. Its sad we had to come together like this, but like they say, everything happens for a reason. And I guess this situation has given us cause to see that and see what the other gives to us."

Colby made his way back with the needed supplies. They were both silently hoping that they'd be able to get the stuff outside with ease. And they knew they needed to move quick with nightfall not all that far off. True it was early enough, but with shortened daylight in January and all they had to do, they needed as much time as they could muster.

Fortunately for them this window was rather sizable. Those that designed the station more than likely built it so large so as to light the area with daylight when the area was hit with storms. Ironic it was also going to be used to save two lives from freezing to death. There was going to be no hassle getting the wood outside; which was the biggest item, through the opening.

Colby hurried back to get the chain saw as Mitch scampered down to the ground below. He made it down without incident. He waited for Colby to return with the chain saw. Once again lost in his thoughts. "I will, if nothing else, save Colby. But I can't tell him that. If he found that out, he'd go nuts. Yes, I want to live, too. But he matters way too much to me and I will not see him die from this."

Before long he saw his lover appear in the window opening, chain saw in hand. He called out, "I left the rope there hanging, tie it to the chain saw and lower it down to me slowly. I don't need to get bopped in the face by that thing." He flashed a full smile, chock full of gleaming white teeth, a smile worthy of being attached to a model. He wanted his boyfriend to know he wasn't all moody or being bossy.

Colby was quick to tie the chain saw and lower it down. And then; once his lover had it in hand, he, too, headed outside. It was definitely colder outside, that much was obvious, as the two well-built hunks took in to account their new surroundings outside, they were suddenly met with the icy chill of the air. It felt as if the air was quite literally ripping the skin off their young faces. They had on gloves, ear muffs, scarves and even goggles. True this wasn't the Yukon or the likes, but the wind chill was something fierce.

Colby began his decent down the icy roof. Being careful where he stepped. Well, at least he thought so. Unfortunately his mind had gotten away from him again. It was on his lover and wanting to survive this predicament. Mitch stood gazing as he saw Colby suddenly lose his footing and in an "Oops, ah shit..." Colby went sliding off, grabbing for the rope after the fact.

Mitch stood helpless, the only way he could react, "Dude....oh, fuck!" Colby fell backwards and began sliding down the rooftop. It wasn't a long fall, maybe 10 feet down. But it was long enough when you're free falling.

With a "Thump. Fuck. Ow. I'm fine," Colby came to a stop. He'd been saved any serious injury due to the fact the snow was piled so high. "At least this stupid snow saved my ass. But if it weren't for this shit in the first place..."

He sat up after gaining his senses Mitch standing over him, "Well, that was fun. I wanna go again." He opted to come across like a kid at an amusement park in an attempt to disguise his embarrassment. "Geez, best to watch that first step. Its a whopper!"

Mitch stood over him shaking his head. "Be careful next time babe. I don't need to fall in love with the perfect man and lose him ya know." He let his words hang for a micro second or two, then winked at his lover to let him know he was teasing and flirting a bit.

Mitch then commented, trying to gain a foothold on the task at hand, "Time to get this tree taken care of." He fired up the chain saw and began chipping away at it. Colby ran back behind the station to grab a log as there were some from trees that had long since fallen. All the while being careful to avoid the pond round back. There were a few logs scattered here and there that were from old trees. They needed a solid sized one to raise up the tree here and there so that the chain saw could slice though the wood.

They were at the task for some time. Trying to stay warm and not think about the cold. It was past mid day by now, but it made little difference in the temperature. Nightfall would be upon them soon enough and it was imperative they got their task completed and soon. Luckily the snow had been reduced to a few stray flakes falling here and there.
