The Long Mile Shot

(Part 1 from 2. Fiction.)

Authors Note: This is my first story so any type of advice, criticism, ideas would be greatly appreciated. The principle storyline is true but with fictional parts mixed in. A lot of parts seem exaggerated but are either true or are to make a point. There isn't much sex at first and is just development but there is a lot more story to come.

As Jake was driving down the road coming home from Wendy’s, he was thinking of what events had unfolded through out the day. If you were to see Jake Carpenter walking down the street or sat next to him in class you would think he was a typical, good looking guy. That’s what everybody thought of the newly admitted junior the first day back to school at Pioneer Valley high school in Ash Fort Texas. Since Pioneer Valley was a fairly small private school with a student population around 1,300, the new guy stood out in his classes. He sat in the back of his classes and didn’t say much to anybody and sat by himself during lunch. Everybody stared on at him, trying to figure him out and what his story was. In 6th period Speech, Mr. Mitchell had everyone stand in the front of the class and give a summary of there lives, parent’s occupation, where they went to school, where they’ve lived in their lives, hobbies, and a couple interesting facts about themselves. The normal ice breaker everyone thought to themselves. When Jake walked to the front of the class everyone stared on intrigued. He looked older then the other students, more mature, more sure about himself when he took his spot at the podium. He stood a straight 6’2” with dirty blonde hair, incredibly deep hazel eyes, strongly defined facial features with no traces of facial hair, and a perfect complexion. He would best be described as a young adult that kept his childhood youth. He wore a white Abercrombie & Fitch shirt with blue stripes that seemed to be made exactly to fit his well built body. His sleeves rolled up and with a comfortable fully erect stance he began to speak as if speaking to a president of a foreign country, controlled, reserved and well thought.

“My name is Jake William Carpenter, I am 18 years old. I was born April 21st 1984 in Sydney Australia.” Everyone’s faces tilted at the thought of a non accented foreigner. “Due to international educational differences I had to take two more years of schooling to reach my current grade level. My father’s name is Patrick and my mothers name is Lisa. They own an international offshore oil drilling company called Tech Shore, originally founded by my great grandpa William Carpenter. I’ve gone to four separate primary schools, two middle schools, and this is my third high school, and hopefully my last.” Again everyone stared on thinking to themselves Jake must be a trouble maker. “I’ve lived in Sydney, Perth, Tokyo, Moscow, Stockholm, London, New York, Maui, San Diego, and just recently moved to Ash Fort.” Everyone’s mouths dropped at the fact that he had to move on average every year and nine months of his entire life. “My hobbies include anything that has to do with guns, water or petrol based engines. Some interesting facts about me. I was shot twice in the chest when I was eleven, I am the youngest person to win the Barret 2500 yard shootout, my eyes change colors and I’m also gay.”

Everyone gasped at his openness towards a highly controversial subject as he walked plainly towards his seat, still in a fully erect posture as if he hadn’t told the entire class something that would cause great ridicule and despair to anybody else. The entire class was silent until the bell rang and motioned them to proceed to the last class of the day.

As Jake turned the corner and drove parallel to a huge field he then thought about what happened the last period of the day during P.E. He wondered if anybody noticed him wearing a bullet proof vest when he changed or if any other guys like him were looking at him. A gay guy looking on to find a boyfriend. The class ran the mile and then proceeded to run sprints against each other. Jake loved to run and had run every day since he was seven. He was like a horse when he ran; you couldn’t keep up with him no matter how hard you tried. He had beat two guys Bryan and Tyler, both who turned the mile jog into a race of power and then continued to beat them in the 100 meter dash. Jake thought nothing of it until Coach Peterson, the P.E. teacher and the track coach ran up to him after class and asked him to go out for the track team.

“You just beat the two fastest guys in our district, Bryan and Tyler.” Coach Peterson explained. Jake refused and politely told him he wasn’t cut out for high school sports because he was always moving. Bryan and Tyler confronted Jake at the end of school and started ridiculing him for being gay. Word traveled fast in a school like that Jake thought to himself.

Jake had known he was gay since he was a young teenager in London and when he told his parents, his mom just simply told him, “Well if that’s what you think you want then that’s fine with us, just we need to warn you that some people might not like it. They might say bad things but just remember that they are just afraid of change. We know your strong, you’ve been through a lot, we know you can handle yourself.”
Then his dad chuckled, “Hell dear, who would ever think Jake is gay unless he told them? Son just remember what you were taught, you have good judgment, you know when to defend yourself and what to do.”

His mom smiled at the conflict Jake was in. She knew her husband was right; Jake could handle himself even at a young age and sometimes scared them both at things he was capable of. When Jake was nine in Tokyo he took a Kendo class (much like fencing) and within a year had surpassed the teacher in his abilities. Shortly after telling his parents about his sexuality he met a very nice girl and told her he was gay very soon on so not to get her hopes up.

“Its ok Jake, I would have never suspected it but its ok.” She said. The next time he moved to another school and was introduced to the ice breaker moment he told everybody he was gay and was proud he did because that’s how he found his first boyfriend. He liked him so much but had to move and they were over. But because of his fight not flight personality Jake continued to always tell everybody he was gay when he moved.

Jake made another turn and started thinking what had happened just as he was leaving school. A young Mexican teenager in a brand new BMW M5 ran a red light and Jake T boned him with his truck. The BMW was completely totaled and there were only a few more scratches on the front push bar on Jake’s green H1 Alpha Hummer. It was completely the other guy’s fault the witnesses told the police but the Mexican guy whose insurance card identified him as Andrew Mendez was not having it and started making allegations that Jake sped up to hit him even though he himself ran the red light. When Andrew’s parents came to pick him up, Andrew explained his side of the story and his parents immediately complained to the officer that they wanted to know exactly what happened. Jake stood next to his truck thinking to himself that Andrew’s family seemed to be special in the city of Ash Fort but the cops didn’t give them any respect and just told them they would send the report to there house after the investigation. Andrew’s car was towed away and Jake was told he could leave and he was not at fault for the accident. But just as Andrew was about to get in his parents car he yelled towards Jake, “Just wait dude, I’m going to get you back, just wait.” Jake knew by how his parents acted and how Andrew said it, the threat was valid.

As he made another turn he drove down the road thinking about how far they lived from town. His parents finally decided that they were going to settle down a little bit and take a more hands off approach to running there business because Jake’s mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had many surgeries and was told they had gotten all of it but she said, “life was to short to move so often” and they were going to move back to her hometown of Ash Fort were they owned thousands of acres and would have a much less stressful life. His parents still would fly all around the globe on their private Boeing 777 jet that they called their “home away from home” to oversee their several billion dollar company.

Jake noticed two older style trucks just off the road with there head lights on, pointing to a group of guys surrounding something on the ground. Jake’s curiosity took over him and he slowed down to see what was going on. He knew nobody lived in the area and the field they were in actually belong to his parents, but was just empty grazing land. As he was driving by he saw three guys lying on the ground surrounded by seven other guys. He stopped his truck in the middle of the road without any of the guys noticing and watched. Two of the guys started kicking the guys on the ground and Jake jumped out of his truck and opened the back door and pulled a twenty five shot drum fed AA12 automatic shotgun out of a case under his back seat. Because of his parents influence in many regions of the world, Jake was allowed to possess many weapons that were reserved for just the military. Jake was well trained with all types of weapons and new his legal parameters. And since the guys were on his property with “No Trespassing” signs posted, he knew he was in his full legal right to threaten them with a gun, and besides, it was Texas. He ran over to the crowd of guys who were all kicking what seemed like three teenage males now laying in the full fetal position and shrieking with pain. When Jake was about fifteen feet away from them he let out two shots into the air to get their attention. All of them froze and turned around instantly to see Jake running at them wielding a massive looking shotgun.

“Don’t move!” Jake pointed the gun at the now frozen individuals. “You guy’s are trespassing on my property.” Jake said calmly as not to cause any sudden stir. They all just stared at him and a guy with a buzzed head, cowboy boots, and a heavy southern accent broke the silence.
“Whoa there killer, it’s just a couple of cock suckers, were just teaching them a lesson.” The guy said.

Jake’s blood started to boil at the thought when he realized it was a bunch of rednecks beating the shit out of gay guys, people like him he thought to himself. Jake was always controlled and always handled himself very calmly but whenever he found someone like himself in trouble he lost control. “I don’t care what you were doing, now get the fuck out a here.” Jake said in a much more aggressive manner.

“Ok we were just about to leave, we….” He paused a moment. “Your some kind of fag lover aren’t you?” Jake disregarded what he said and looked down on the ground seeing two of the teenagers agonizing in pain. “Get the fuck back into your trucks and drive away before I have to skin every single one of you alive.” Jake said with a heavy angered voice.

Some of the guys started scrambling around and ran towards the trucks passing by Jake still holding the gun. “Come on Billie; let’s get the fuck out of here.” One of them said.
Jake assumed Billie was the ring leader of the group and one of the three that stayed for a while staring Jake down. They slowly walked by Jake as he turned and followed them with the gun. “Just wait cock sucker, you won’t have that gun someday and you’ll be sorry.” Billie said

That pushed Jake over the end and he hit Billie in the side with the stock of his gun and he fell to the ground. “O you’re going to regret that fucker.” Billie hollered as he tried to attack Jake but was met half way with the muzzle of the gun.
“Don’t even try it Billie.” Jake said
“You learn quickly, your going to learn real quick you messed with the wrong guys.” Billie replied

Billie got up and went to the truck and they all drove away yelling more obscene things. Jake ran over to the three bodies still rolling on the ground in pain, still moaning. There faces covered in so much blood that there mothers would never be able to identify them if you would to show them a picture. Jake ran back to his truck, threw the shotgun back in the case and drove up next to the three bloodied bodies and put them inside. All of them lifeless, except for there light breathing. If it wasn’t for their breathing he would have thought they were all dead by the way their limp bodies felt in his arms. The hospital was on the entire other end of town and even if Jake drove as fast as he could it would take him 45 minutes to drive there. Just as he was thinking about his options caring the third body into his truck, the bloodied teenager coughed up blood all over Jake’s striped shirt. He knew he had to get them to the hospital. He drove towards his house that was only a mile away almost running the security gates down because they didn’t open fast enough and stopped next to their helipad. He switched their helicopter into start up mode and loaded the bodies. Just as he was shutting the doors his father came on the radio. “Jake what the hell are you doing?”

Jake franticly yelled into the headset as he lifted off. “Dad call the hospital, I have three teenagers all fucked up.”

Jake’s dad knew his son never cursed and when he did it was beyond serious. Jake’s dad called the hospital and told them his son was on his way with three seriously injured teenagers and the operator asked where Jake was and his dad said he would be on the helipad in less then 10 minutes?

“Excuse me sir?” The operator asked.
“He’s in a helicopter, have somebody waiting god damnit,” Patrick, Jake’s father replied and hung up the phone and told his wife about the situation and started driving to the hospital.

As Jake was touching down he didn’t see anybody around the helipad and ran inside yelling frantically, covered in blood. “Somebody help!” A Dr. came running towards him asking if he was ok and tried to calm him down. “I’m fine you fucking moron, my dad just called in, I have three guys in my helicopter on the damn helipad and I need fucking help.”

The Dr. laughed and peered out the glass doors and was shocked to see a large helicopter, much bigger then the medevack helicopter that usually landed there. He yelled something that Jake didn’t hear as he ran outside, soon followed by about a dozen people running behind him with stretchers. They unloaded all three bodies and rushed them into the emergency room. Jake stood there and looked into the passenger compartment of his parents own private helicopter in horror. He was brought back to when he was eleven walking the streets of Moscow with his friend from school. They were walking down the street when a car drove by and started shooting. They were shooting into a shop but Jake had gotten caught in the cross fire and was hit twice and his friend Spencer was also shot multiple times. The two young boys were rushed to the hospital, Spencer passed away and Jake survived. Since then Jake had always been paranoid about being in a situation like that again and started taking weapons training and tactics classes and started wearing body armor. The only way Jake could go to sleep at night was if he knew he had some sort of firearm close by. His parents allowed it and thought to themselves, “At least he’ll be safe.”

A nurse came up to him and asked if he was ok and walked into the hospital and sat in the waiting room, still covered in blood. His parents arrived almost fifty minutes later and sat next to their son.

“Are you ok Jake?” His dad asked calmly.
“O yea I’m fine, this isn’t mine. One of the guys threw it up on me when I was caring them to my truck.” Just then Jake stopped. “Damn, is it hard to get blood stains out?”

His parents laughed at his mixed personality and waited with him to hear the news of three complete strangers. When Jake and his parents were trying to find him a new shirt and were getting something to eat because Jake’s Wendy’s burger was now smashed, people rushed into the E.R. asking where there son’s were and what had happened. The Dr. told them all that their sons were still in some sort of surgery or test but none of the injuries were life threatening. They calmed down and sat in the waiting room until they could see there sons. Jake and his parents walked into the waiting room and waited, not knowing who the new people were or why they were there. An administrative person came into the waiting room and told Jake and his family a medevac helicopter was on the way and they had to move there helicopter. He laughed knowing it was an awkward request.

“Son me and your mother will take it back, we have to fly out to D.C. early tomorrow anyways. We’ll see you in a few days. Give us a call and tell us how those boys are.” His father said and threw Jake the keys to his car and they were off. By now, Jake was not fazed in the least bit that his parents would leave him in bad times. He was strong and could handle being on his own just fine. The unknown teenager’s parents watched in awe as the couple lifted off in a huge helicopter and left their son waiting.

“Why are you here son?” A man asked him.
“I brought in three seriously injured teens and I just wanted to know how they are.” Three women quickly ran over to Jake and all started asking questions all at once. “Excuse me!” Jake said loudly with a firm voice. “If you let me explain I will the best I can. I was driving home and I saw two trucks on our property just off of James Rd. and saw they were surrounding.” Jake paused, “I assume your son’s and beating them. I ran out of my truck with a shotgun and scared them away, then loaded them in my truck and drove to my house which was only a mile away and loaded them in our helicopter and flew here, that’s why our helicopter was here. And now we’re here.” Everybody looked at him as if he had just told them he was the president of The United States.

“Where’s James Rd.? A woman asked.
“It’s just a little less then thirty minutes north of Ash Fort over the Gavintone bridge.” Jake said. Two of the Father’s eyes went wide.
“You’re a Carpenter aren’t you? The Carpenter family owns all the land up there.”
“Yes sir, my names Jake Carpenter.” They all were shocked. Jake’s family had a well known heritage in Ash Fort and everyone knew that his great grandfather founded the town over a hundred year ago and eventually progressed to a pleasant city around 200,000. They continued to talk about the event and Jake told them as much as he knew, except he didn’t identify who had beaten them or what it was about. Jake knew better not to open up a man hunt for Billie and his friends, at least until the other three were awake and he got the facts right. Jake was told about the three boys and there names, Sean, Collin, and Danny. Their parents tried to identify them by what they looked like but Jake couldn’t remember seeing anything but blood on there faces. Instead of horrifying their parents he just said plainly “it happened to fast.” The doctor came out and told the parents there sons were ok but had to stay for at least two days for observation, but were awake and in good health and said family could see them. As the families walked away Jake sat back down in relief.

“Come on honey, you can come with us.” A woman who said Sean was her son. They walked into a large room and all three teenagers were there. Each family went to there bedside and Jake pieced who was who. Jake was introduced to all of them and each time the battered boys cried in joy. They stayed for awhile, Jake staying closer to Sean just for the fact that his mom invited him in. Finally each boy’s father motioned for them to leave but all the mothers stayed. Jake thought this was the best moment to leave gracefully and said his goodbyes.

“Did you really do all the things you said son?” Danny’s father asked
“Yes sir.” Jake said and continued walking towards the parking lot. Jake got into his father’s car and drove off. The boy’s fathers watched him as he drove down the road in a Ferrari 360 Modena and thought to themselves their sons lives would never be the same.

The next day at school there was talk about the three boys who got beat up and Jake figured out they were also juniors at his school and he had at least one class with all three of them too. The three boys did not go to school that week and didn’t here about the rumors about Jakes sexual orientation. Three days later Jake heard a ring coming from the front gate monitoring system. He walked over to the intercom and security monitor and saw what looked like four boys in a newer Chevy Tahoe.

“Hey dude, its Danny, Sean and Collin and my brother Brad. We just wanted to come by and were wondering if we could talk to you?”
“O yea sure, follow the road up and park in the front.” Jake said opening the gate

The gates opened and they drove up a hill and proceeded on to a long corridor surrounded by large trees with horses in between them and another similar corridor on the other side of the horses. They were in utter shock driving down the road nearing one of the largest houses they had ever seen. They parked by the house that had two large doors which they thought was the front. They looked up at the castle like house and took in the vast display of wealth it shown. Jake walked out of the two heavy doors that opened at the same time.

“He guys, welcome to our house.” Everyone walked up to the front door and Sean was in tears as he gave Jake a huge hug. Jake instantly felt a spark run through his body and he consoled the smaller boy who stood almost four inches shorter then himself. Jake hadn’t felt that spark since he met his first boyfriend so many years ago. He gripped Sean tighter and Sean reciprocated by crying more. “Come on Sean, let’s go inside.” Jake said as Sean slowly let go of his protector. Sean finally felt at ease for the first time in many years. He felt as if he needn’t worry about anything and stopped crying and followed Jake into the massive house.

“So you guys want a tour?” Jake asked jokingly.
“Hell yea!” The forth guy chimed in. Jake assumed this must be Brad. They toured the massive 20,000 square foot house and Jake spoke calmly as he showed them points of interest. How Jake was talking, it was as if none of the material goods meant anything, as if everything was a joke to him.

“This is the library, I have no idea why we have one and my mom hates it.”
“This is where we keep all our stuff we accumulated throughout our lives.” Jake explained as they walked into what seemed like a museum show room.
“We have a lot of shit, my dad says we should just get rid of it but my moms saves everything.” They laughed and continued outside onto a third story balcony that looked out onto their property. The house was shaped like a large U with the balcony just over the front door which was the bottom of the U.
“That’s were I found you guys.” Jake pointed to where all four of them had met four days ago on that painful night. Their eyes started getting glassy and almost started crying.
“Jake can we go talk about that night?” Collin finally said.
“Yea, sure let’s go in the back by the pool. It’s nice and peaceful back there.”

As they walked down the hall something caught Sean’s eye. Every door in the hallway was open and you could see into them but a room on the corner next to Jake’s was closed. Not only was it closed but it had a computer screen on the side of it. Sean knocked on the door and it was solid steal, not like the heavy metal fire proof doors at school but solid thick steal.

“Hey Jake, sorry to ask but what’s with the computer?” Jake turned around and noticed what Sean was talking about.
“It’s like a safe. I keep important stuff in there.” As they walked Sean noticed the same type of door and computer in Jake’s room that lead to the same locked room. Though he didn’t know it then, that room housed the vastness of Jake’s paranoia and he would have to help Jake get over that paranoia in the near future.

“So what do you guys want to talk about?” Jake asked
Danny started slowly, “Well, umm, we were wondering if you knew, what ummm…” “What those guys said about you guys? Yea I heard. And gay or not, I would have done the same thing either way.” They all looked scared and Jake knew why. “I didn’t tell anybody about who did it. I didn’t want to start something that I didn’t know entirely about.” They all felt relieved. “But I would like to know why you guys won’t tell.” They all thought, “Who is this guy, how does he know what were thinking?”
“Jake, your new here, you don’t get who Billie Reed is.” Collin said.
“Let me see, he’s a gay hating redneck who is a Senior at the delinquent high school, has been in so many confrontations he should be in federal prison but the only reason he isn’t is because his father is actually a good mayor and his uncle is a corrupt Sherriff and his best friend Thomas Payne’s dad is a district senator and the rest of them are rich snubs who’s parents bail them out of everything? Miss anything?” Jake said angrily
“How the hell do you know all that?” Collin gasped.

“Let’s just say I have my means of investigation.” Jake had more then just that. He asked his parents head of security Jeremy to look into the matter and within three days knew what type of pasta Billie liked. Jeremy was a retired CIA adviser who not many people asked questions about except for Jake. Ever since Jake was a kid, Jeremy took it upon himself to protect the thing that his employers cared most about, Jake. He had found the gunmen that shot Jake in Moscow and sent them on a little detour off a bridge. Jake new that Jeremy had avenged him but never asked.

“Wow dude, did you find out all the shit about us?” Sean asked in a frightened voice. “No, I was hoping we could be friends and you could just tell me about yourselves.” “You do know that if your friends with us that you’re going to get shit because were...” Jake cut Collin off before he could finish.
“Because you’re what? Gay, come on dude, I’m the new guy, I’m going to get shit no matter what, and I don’t care if you’re gay, straight, or an Alien from Pluto….Well actually if you were an Alien from Pluto I might care.” They all laughed and talked for hours about there lives. Jake tried as hard as he could to steer away from himself and tried keeping the conversation on the other four boys. It finally got late and Jake asked them all if they wanted to stay the night and they all eagerly accepted. They called there parents and told them they were staying over and each one had the same response to there parents questions.
